    3 Credit Hours
    The archaeology of native North America, with emphasis on major phases of prehistory, from passage across the Bering Straits theory, to early protohistoric horizons. Emphasis on material culture and life ways through ethnographic analogy. The course begins with the history of American archaeology. Topics include: introduction to archaeology; history of North American archaeology: Paleo-Indians; the Archaic period; the Southwest; Woodland traditions.

  • SOC 4163 - The Magical Worldview #

    3 Credit Hours
    A cross-cultural and comparative exploration of religion, magic, and supernatural belief systems. Emphasis is also placed on indigenous religions of the Western hemisphere. The course examines how religion permeates other aspects of society and culture. Topics include: the anthropology of religion; symbolism, myth, ritual, and taboo; shamans, priests, and prophets; the religious use of drugs; witchcraft, sorcery, and evil; demons, exorcism, divination, and magic, ghosts, souls, and ancestors-power of the dead; crisis cults.

    The archaeology and ethnography of pre-Columbian Mesoamerica, which includes present-day Mexico and Central America.     This course introduces the phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics of the Spanish language, with an overview of the history of the language and the major dialectical variations of Spanish as a world language.

  • SPAN 4951 - Senior Seminar #

    1 Credit Hours
    This capstone course includes discussion of major topics and themes in Hispanic culture and the development of individual research projects with a written component and a presentation.  Students also prepare a portfolio of assessment artifacts and complete an ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI). 
    Restrictions: Senior standing, at least 30 hours in the major and instructor permission.

  • SPED 3313 - American Sign Language I #

    3 Credit Hours
    Introduction to American Sign Language which includes the development of receptive and expressive skills in authentic situations; an introduction to the Deaf culture.  Emphasis will be on acquiring elementary conversational skills through targeted grammar, syntax, and vocabulary.  The importance of nonverbal factors will be incorporated through the use of gestures, pantomime, body language, and eye training. 
  
  • SPED 3323 - American Sign Language II #

    3 Credit Hours
    American Sign Language II is a continuation of the study of American Sign Language I.  This course further develops receptive and expressive skills in ASL for authentic situations and continues the study of Deaf culture.  This includes an expanded emphasis on expressive skills to begin the development of American Sign language fluency.
    Prerequisite: SPED 3313 American Sign Language I with a minimum grade of C or instructor permission. 
  
  • SPED 3333 - American Sign Language III

    3 Credit Hours
    Students further develop receptive and expressive skills in American Sign Language (ASL) for conversational, instructional, and artistic situations.  Students learn how to narrate, describe, compare, and comment to further develop ASL fluency.  ASL III is a continuation of ASL II, and continues the study of Deaf culture.
    Prerequisite: SPED 3323 American Sign Language II with a minimum grade of C. or instructor permission.
  
  • SPED 3343 - American Sign Language IV

    3 Credit Hours
    American Sign Language (ASL) IV is a continuation of the study of ASL III.  Students further develop receptive and expressive skills in ASL for conversational, instructional, and artistic (formal and informal) situations including an expanded emphasis on expressive skills.  Students will learn how to narrate, describe, compare, and comment to further develop ASL fluency.  Vocabulary, use of classifiers, and grammar will be emphasized.  The course will also continue the study of Deaf culture.

  • SPED 3353 - Deaf Culture

    3 Credit Hours
    Students will study American Deaf culture from the past to present.  Students will study social norms and values as well as current trends in community through the use of Deaf literature and individual testimonies from Deaf presenters.  This course will be taught in American Sign Language by a Deaf instructor with an interpreter.
  
  • SPED 3363 - Community/Career Seminar in American Sign Language

    3 Credit Hours
    Students explore various professions with and in the service to the Deaf community.  Students will observe and serve the Deaf community in areas such as Deaf education, interpreting, rehabilitation, social services, independent living, support service provision for the deaf-blind, counseling, speech-language pathology/audiology, deaf ministry, deaf senior services, etc., with special emphasis on areas that relate to the students’ major area of study.  Students will serve the Deaf community in various events throughout the semester.

    Foster understanding of the contributions of historical features, legal aspects, analysis of current/future trends and issues related to special education.  An understanding toward the characteristics of varying disabilities, student Individualized Educational Plans (IEP), and the current identification and assessment process involving Response to Intervention (RTI).  Classroom assessment, IEP progress monitoring, and accountability assessment will also be addressed.

    Provide an overview of principles of instructional design, student characteristics and assessment with consideration for Learning Disabilities, Intellectual Disabilities, Emotional and Behavioral Disorders and Other Health Impairments.  Knowledge of research-based instruction, knowledge and skill in using data collection to make decisions about IEP’s and student progress, instruction, program, accommodations and teaching methodology for students with disabilities will be shared.

  • SPED 4233 - Instructional Strategies for Students with Disabilities

    3 Credit Hours
    Develop instructional strategies and effective techniques for teaching students with disabilities in a variety of general and special education settings.  Course objectives target remediation and progression of skills focused around an academic curriculum for students with disabilities.  Special emphasis will be on reading remediation and the development of language arts instructional methods for students with disabilities.  An observational field experience will be included in order to experience developing a Functional Behavior Assessment and Behavior Intervention Plan.
    Prerequisite: EDUC 3113 Educational Psychology and  EDUC 3313 Clinical Teaching & Pre-Internship I with a minimum grade of C or concurrent enrollment, AND SPED 4223 Instructional Design and Curriculum for Students with Disabilities with a minimum grade of C.

  • SPED 4242 - Collaboration and Transition Planning of Students with Disabilities

    2 Credit Hours
    A review of intrapersonal/interpersonal characteristics which serve students with disabilities, advocating for students with disabilities, communicate with IEP teams, and collaboration with all other service providers of children with disabilities will be reviewed. Effective planning procedures to guide students with disabilities during transitional phases that include curricular, interagency, self-determination, and family aspects of transition will be discussed.
    Prerequisite: EDUC 3113 Educational Psychology and EDUC 3313 Clinical Teaching & Pre-Internship I with a minimum grade of C or concurrent enrollment.

  • SPED 4253 - Instructional Evaluations and Implementation for Students with Disabilities

    3 Credit Hours
    Focus on implementation and evaluation of skills in design, curriculum, and strategies of instruction for students with disabilities in a variety of general and special education settings in public school field experiences.  A field experience will be integrated into this course so application of knowledge is demonstrated by the students in their ability to deliver research-based interventions, including RTI, use effective instructional strategies, apply behavioral modifications, administer informal evaluations and monitor IEP progress for students with disabilities. 
    Prerequisite: EDUC 3113 Educational Psychology and EDUC 3313 Clinical Teaching & Pre-Internship I with a minimum grade of C or concurrent enrollment.

  • SPED 4263 - Assistive Technology Strategies and Universal Design for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders

    3 Credit Hours
    Provides information pertaining to assistive technology strategies and alternative/augmentative communication systems that are useful for the academic and social progress of students with disabilities, especially students with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD).   A synopsis of the characteristics, identification, history, causes, interventions, and current issues regarding students with Autism Spectrum Disorders will be reviewed.
    Prerequisite: EDUC 3113 Educational Psychology and EDUC 3313 Clinical Teaching & Pre-Internship I with a minimum grade of C or concurrent enrollment.

    3 Credit Hours
    This course focuses on accent modification for students who speak different dialects and languages.  Emphasis will be on pronunciation, grammar, and conversational skills.  Listening and speaking exercises will be practiced during class.  One hour a week will be set aside for small group speaking instruction to reduce accents.
