Higher Education Administration and Services M.S.

(42 Semester Hours)

Purpose

This degree program will provide options to effectively develop (1) college student personnel services professionals and (2) higher education administrators. Student knowledge and skills will be enhanced through appropriate coursework and theory to practice experiences within the university/college setting.

Admission

Admission to the Higher Education Administration and Services program includes:

STEP ONE: Program Admission

Prior to first enrollment, the student must:

  • Hold an earned bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Be formally admitted to the Graduate College.
  • It is required that all admission requirements be met prior to enrollment.
  • Meet with your assigned advisor prior to enrollment; sign a Statement of Understanding.
  • No more than six (06) credit hours will be allowed to be taken during a semester, for no more than two semesters, until being fully admitted into the program.
  • These courses would be restricted to the Common Core of nine (9) hours.

Meet the following Program requirements:

  • Take and have a satisfactory score on either the MAT or GRE.
  • Submit to Admissions Committee *
    • Three (3) sealed letters of recommendation and other included informational materials.
    • A statement of your long term career objectives and how a master’s degree will help you achieve your objectives; be specific. (The statement is to be between one and two pages, typed, double-spaced, 12 point font with margins of 1 inch all around.)
    • All college transcripts
    • Program Admission Form with personal information provided by the student.
  • GPA requirement of
    • 3.00 overall, undergraduate, or
    • 3.25 in the last 60 credit hours, undergraduate, or
    • Have an earned Master’s degree from an accredited university
  • If the GPA requirements (see above) are not met, one of the following items must be satis­fied:
    • MAT – scaled score of 383, or
    • GRE – combined math and verbal score of 900
    • Must use scores from MAT/GRE that are less than five (5) years old.
    • It is required that you pass either exam prior to enrollment.

All materials to be considered for a particular semester are to be received by the Admis­sions Committee by 5:00 pm on November 1 for a Fall term, April 1 for a Spring term, or July 1 for a Summer term. (If these dates fall on a weekend or holiday, the deadline will be the last business day prior to the holiday or weekend.)

Admissions Committee

  • All materials must be submitted by the applicant.
  • A formal interview and/or other materials may be requested by the committee at its discretion.
  • The Admissions Committee will review all materials and will make a recommendation concerning admission to a program.

STEP TWO: Meet with Advisor

Upon formal admission into the program, it is the student’s responsibility to meet with assigned advisor and complete the following:

  • Degree Plan,
  • Students must enroll in first block of required courses; The Common Core of nine (9) hours
  • Statement of understanding, and
  • Any other required material.

STEP THREE: Admission to Candidacy

After the Completion of fifteen (15) hours of coursework:

To meet candidacy requirements in the M.S. Higher Education Administration and Services program, the student must complete the following:

  • Attain formal admission to the Graduate College.
  • Attain formal admission to the program of MS Higher Education Administration and Services.
  • Complete and file a plan of study (degree plan) approved by the advisor and the Dean of the Graduate College. Any changes made in the student’s Plan of Study require prior written approval by the advisor and the Dean of the Graduate College.
  • Complete and file a Statement of Understanding signed by the student and the advisor with the Dean of the Graduate College.
  • Meet with advisor to complete and file Admission to Candidacy Form.
  • Maintain a minimum graduate program GPA of 3.00
  • Regardless, twenty-seven (27) graduate credit hours must be earned after candidacy has been awarded.

CONDITIONAL PROGRAM ENROLLMENT

For those persons who wish to pursue a degree, but are not able to meet the require­ments for the undergraduate GPA and/or MAT/GRE, conditional enrollment may be allowed as follows:

  • A graduate program GPA of 3.5 must be obtained for twelve (12) credit hours of course work taken at Northeastern State University, and all other admittance require­ments must be completed during the ï¬rst semester of enrollment.
  • Full admittance will be considered by the Admissions Committee at the comple­tion of twelve credit hours upon the written request of the student within the semester deadlines for admissions.
  • No more than six (6) credit hours will be allowed to be taken in any semester until fully admitte into the program.
  • These courses would be restricted to the Common Core of nine (9) hours.
  • The second semester of enrollment will have to be authorized by the student’s advisor.

Curriculum Requirements: (42 hour program)


The College Student Personnel Services and Higher Education Administration options share a common core of nine (9) hours, internship and/or practicum of three (3) or six (6) hours, inquiry and research (3) hours, and thesis (3) hours. The following outline the curriculum requirements for the two options:

Directed Research/Thesis experience for the Candidate


The Directed Research/Thesis experience for the Candidate in Higher Education Administration and Services re­quires enrollment in HIED 5910 Directed Research (1-6 hrs maximum) and completion of a Thesis.

A 3.0 grade point average in all graduate course work is required to be eligible for the Directed Research/Thesis experience. Enrollment in HIED 5910 Directed Research (1-6 hrs maximum) includes completion of a Thesis or Grant Proposal. The research is to be developed in the candidate’s option area and be acceptable to the student’s advisor, the two (02) advisor-approved readers, and the Dean of the Graduate College. The Thesis/Grant Proposal should be submitted in final form to the two (02) readers for review 60 days prior to the close of the last semester in which the candidate expects to complete degree requirements. Following review and approval by the readers (with required readers’ signatures), the Thesis/Grant Proposal should be submitted to the Graduate Dean 30 days prior to the close of the semester (May 01 for fall graduation, Oct 01 for spring graduation, and March 01 for summer graduation) in which the student expects to complete degree requirements.

Other requirements:


Students:

  1. Submit a Thesis approved by the graduate faculty to the Graduate Dean at least thirty days prior to graduation.
  2. After formal admission into the program, may enroll in no more than nine (9) semester hours each summer or fifteen (15) semester hours each fall or spring semester.
  3. Must complete an approved degree program including a minimum of forty-two (42) semester hours at the 5,000 level.
  4. May use no more than a maximum of three (3) semester hours credit in workshops and/or short term classes toward graduation.
  5. May transfer a maximum of nine (9) semester hours credit, providing all graduate transfer course work attempted carries an average grade of “B” or better; only courses with grades of “A” or “B” may be used.
  6. Must earn a minimum of twenty-four (24) hours in residence at Northeastern including the last nine (9) semester hours.
  7. Cannot earn credits by correspondence to count toward the Master of Science degree in Higher Education Administration and Services.
  8. Cannot use work older than six (6) calendar years for graduation, excluding time spent in the American Armed Forces.
  9. Must maintain a 3.0 grade point average. Courses with a grade lower than a “C” may not be used for graduation.
  10. Abide by the stated regulations governing the graduate program in the Graduate Catalog, and expected to abide by the ethics and standards of the profession.
  11. Submit an application for Master’s degree and a diploma fee prior to graduation.
The due dates for submission are:

May 01 for fall graduation, Oct 01 for spring graduation, and March 01 for summer graduation in which the student expects to complete degree.
