  • MKT 4950 - Marketing Internship

    3 or 6 Hours. Work in an approved business position related to marketing. Prerequisite: Junior standing or above and approval of department chair. Maximum of 3 hours can apply as a Marketing or Business elective. Consists of applying knowledge which has been gained while working toward a degree.
  
  • MLS 4013 - Concepts in Immunology

    3 Hours. The immune mechanisms of the human body involved with resistance to infection, production of allergic conditions and use of serological methods in other scientific fields.  Prerequisite: Admission into Medical Laboratory Science Degree Completion Program and permission of the MLS program director.
  
  • MLS 4124 - Pathogenic Microbiology

    4 Hours. Discussion of general aspects of infectious diseases including bacteriology, rickettsiology, virology, medical mycology, protozoology and helminthology.  Prerequisite: Admission into Medical Laboratory Science Degree Completion Program and permission of the MLS program director.
  
  • MLS 4133 - Clinical Laboratory Genetics

    3 Hours. Basic principles of genetics including molecular genetics.  Emphasis on genetic basics of disease and technology for diagnosis.  Lecture presented through electronic media for distance learning students enrolled in medical laboratory science program. Prerequisite: Admission into Medical Laboratory Science Degree Completion Program and permission of the MLS program director.
  
  • MLS 4226 - Clinical Virology/Parasitology/Mycology

    6 Hours. Basic principles relevant to biochemistry of viral infection in hosts and ecology of virus.  Life cycles and pathogenesis parasites and fungi. Emphasis on diagnostic tools for identification of viral infections. Prerequisite: Admission into Medical Laboratory Science Degree Completion Program, BIOL 3224, and MLS 4124.
  
  • MLS 4332 - Clinical Practicum I

    2 Hours. Students will be assigned to clinical laboratories affiliates for practical experiences in various procedures and techniques in Phlebotomy and Hematology laboratory.  This clinical includes observation and the completion of the clinical competencies, including psychomotor and affective skills, signed off by the laboratory supervisor or teaching Medical Laboratory Scientist. Grade for the Practicum is earned according to the published rubric provided to the student and entered by NSU faculty. Prerequisite: Completion of MLS 4334: Advanced Clinical Hematology with a grade of “C” or above.
  
  • MLS 4334 - Advanced Clinical Hematology

    4 Hours. The theory and laboratory study of hematology.  Systematized study of disease, cell maturation and function, and methodology used in routine and special hematology studies, and in correlation of hematological findings with physiological conditions. Laboratory competencies completed at affiliated clinical site. Prerequisite: Completion of clinical core prerequisites for the Medical Laboratory Degree Completion program.
  
  • MLS 4423 - Clinical Practicum II

    3 Hours. Students will be assigned to clinical laboratories affiliates for practical experiences in various procedures and techniques in the Chemistry, Urinalysis, Coagulation and Body Fluids laboratories.   This clinical includes observation and the completion of the clinical competencies, including psychomotor and affective skills, signed off by the laboratory supervisor or teaching Medical Laboratory Scientist. Grade for the Practicum is earned according to the published rubric provided to the student and entered by NSU faculty. Prerequisite: Prerequisites: Completion of MLS 4424: Advanced Clinical Chemistry; MLS 4712: Urinalysis and Body Fluids and MLS 4722: Coagulation courses with a grade of “C” or above.
  
  • MLS 4424 - Advanced Clinical Chemistry

    4 Hours. The theory and laboratory study of clinical chemistry. The theory and laboratory methodology of analytical biochemistry, clinical microscopy, urinalysis, and routine and special procedures of medical significance.  Advanced theory and laboratory methodology of analytical biochemistry, instrumentation, lab mathematics, quality control, routine and special procedures and medical significance.  Laboratory competencies completed at affiliated clinical site. Prerequisite: CHEM 2004 or CHEM 3123 and completion of clinical core prerequisites for the Medical Laboratory Degree Completion program.
  
  • MLS 4464 - Advanced Clinical Bacteriology

    4 Hours. The theory and laboratory study of pathogenic bacteria.  Includes isolation, identification, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and medical significance of bacteria.  Topics of quality control, computer applications, safety and governmental regulations will also be covered.    Laboratory competencies completed at affiliated clinical site. Prerequisite: Completion of clinical core prerequisites for the Medical Laboratory Degree Completion program.
  
  • MLS 4474 - Clinical Practicum III

    4 Hours. Students will be assigned to clinical laboratories affiliates for practical experiences in various procedures and techniques in the General Laboratory Practices, Microbiology, Immunology and Immunohematology laboratories.  This clinical includes observation and the completion of the clinical competencies, including psychomotor and affective skills, signed off by the laboratory supervisor or teaching Medical Laboratory Scientist. Grade for the Practicum is earned according to the published rubric provided to the student and entered by NSU faculty. Prerequisite: Completion of MLS 4464: Advanced Clinical Bacteriology, MLS 4562: Clinical Immunology and Serology and MLS 4572: Clinical Immunohematology courses with a grade of “C” or above.
  
  • MLS 4513 - Molecular Diagnosis

    3 Hours. Theory and methodology of medical genomic/proteomic assays and medical significance. Methods include PCR, flow cytometry, electrophoresis and blotting techniques. Laboratory experiences are presented as an on-campus workshop for students enrolled in MLS program. Prerequisite: Completion of clinical core prerequisites for the Medical Laboratory Degree Completion program.
  
  • MLS 4562 - Clinical Immunology and Serology

    2 Hours. The theory of immunologic responses and procedures used in serological determinations as they relate to the medical significance of immunology and infectious disease.  Laboratory competencies completed at affiliated clinical site. Prerequisite: Completion of clinical core prerequisites for the Medical Laboratory Degree Completion program.
  
  • MLS 4572 - Clinical Immunohematology

    2 Hours. The theory of immunohematology, fundamentals of antigen - antibody reactions, blood groups and types, compatibility testing, blood components and the lab methods used as they relate to the medical significance of immunohematology.  Laboratory competencies completed at affiliated clinical site. Prerequisite: Completion of clinical core prerequisites for the Medical Laboratory Degree Completion program.
  
  • MLS 4613 - Communications in Medical Laboratory Sciences

    3 Hours. Lecture/discussion of topics of concern in medicine that deal with patient and health provider communication.  Students will present 3 separate 15-minute oral discussions regarding new techniques, new discoveries and patient communication in clinical laboratory sciences.  Lecture presented through electronic media for distance learning students enrolled in MLS program.  Student presentations are on site via teleconference or program director visit. Prerequisite: Admission into Medical Laboratory Science Degree Completion program and permission of the MLS program director. 
  
  • MLS 4623 - Laboratory Statistics

    3 Hours. Focus of laboratory statistics to include mean, median and mode as well as standard deviation and coefficient of variation.  Principles of in run quality control as well as standardization of instrumentation. Prerequisite: Admission into Medical Laboratory Science Degree Completion Program and permission of MLS program director.
  
  • MLS 4712 - Urinalysis and Body Fluids

    2 Hours. The theory and laboratory study of urinalysis and body fluids. Includes methods used in instrumentation for specimen analysis, quality control and medical significance.  Laboratory competencies completed at affiliated clinical site. Prerequisite: Completion of clinical core prerequisites for the Medical Laboratory Degree Completion program.
  
  • MLS 4722 - Coagulation

    2 Hours. The theory and laboratory study of hemostasis.  Includes methods used in instrumentation for specimen analysis, quality control and medical significance.  Laboratory competencies completed at affiliated clinical site. Prerequisite: Completion of clinical core prerequisites for the Medical Laboratory Degree Completion program.
  
  • MLS 4812 - Research Methods in Medical Laboratory Science

    2 Hours. Theory of research methodologies including journal review and development of research proposals.  Introduction to most current acceptable writing styles for scientific papers.  Course culminates in a research proposal. Prerequisite: Admission into Medical Laboratory Science Degree Completion program and permission of the MLS program director.
  
  • MLS 4822 - Laboratory Management

    2 Hours. Principles and practices of the medical laboratory including basic management skills, health care delivery systems, ethics, professionalism, communication skills, human resources, and financial management, performance improvement, education methodology, quality assurance, science education methodology, computer applications, laboratory safety and special projects.  Prerequisite: Admission into Medical Laboratory Science Degree Completion Program and permission of the MLS program director.
  
  • MLS 4900 - Special Topics in Medical Laboratory Sciences

    1-2 Hours. Subject areas to be covered may range over any of the various areas of medical laboratory sciences. Specific content and format will be determined by the specific course offered and the needs and interests of the participants. Can be repeated in subsequent semesters up to 2 hours total.
  
  • MLS 4912 - Seminar in Medical Laboratory Sciences

    2 Hours. Review of all areas of medical laboratory science, hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, bloodbank, immunology, coagulation and microbiology. Course culminates in mock board of certification in preparation for American Society of Clinical Pathologists Board of Certification Examination. Prerequisite: Completion of all clinical core prerequisites and clinical core courses.
  
  • MUS 1002 - Piano Class for Non-Music Majors #

    2 Hours. A beginning piano course designed to introduce the student with no previous musical training to basic musicianship principles such as reading, rhythm, and harmony. The understanding of these principles will occur through the study of beginning piano repertoire as well as activities in harmonization and elementary improvisation/composition.

    3 Hours. The study of 20th century and contemporary compositional practices in harmony, rhythm, and sound. In-depth score analysis, student writing exercises and compositions utilized.
