HIST 3293 - Europe, 1815-1914

Description: Students will demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of European history between the end of the Napoleonic Empire and World War I. Special attention will be given to the effects of the Industrial Revolution, conservative Restoration, Romanticism in politics and culture, varieties of nationalism and socialism, 1848 revolutions, the Crimean War, the last wave of European imperialism, fin-de-siècle trends, and the unification of Italy and Germany. A major focus of the course will be on the cultural, economic, and political changes that led to World War I. Through engagement with primary and secondary scholarly sources, students will examine the role of religion, empire, class, race, and gender in social and political development. Students will develop essential workforce readiness skills in effective oral and written communication, critical thinking, research, and analysis.

Note: A major focus of the course will be the colonial, economic, and political conflicts that led to World War I.
