Visually Impaired Certificate

Standard Certificate

The Applicant shall:


1.


Be admitted to the Graduate College prior to enrollment:

  1. Complete Application (contact 918-456-5511, ext 2093)
  2. Furnish an official transcript;

2.


Hold a valid teaching certificate; elementary, elementary-secondary library media specialist, vocational-technical or special education;

3.


Have completed prerequisite course work in Education of the Exceptional Child and Reading and Language Development in Young Children.

Seventeen hours are required which takes two consecutive summers to complete:


SPED 5333 - Seminar in Education of Exceptional Children: Instructional Strategies and Technology for Students with Visual Impairment. Description: Consideration of basic materials, techniques, and procedures for those preparing to teach the visually impaired.

SPED 5333 - Seminar in Education of Exceptional Children: Practicum in Visual Impairments. Description: Designed to allow students enrolled in the program the opportunity to observe and participate in educational activities specifically designed for the visually impaired.

SPED 5543 - Seminar in Individual Studies: Eye/vision Conditions and Problems in the Visually Impaired. Description: Includes 1) a review of information regarding health-related biology, including genetics; 2) demonstrations of the interrelationship of the eye and vision with systemic human physiology; 3) detailed information on the embryology pathophysiology of some common childhood ocular diseases; 4) methods for evaluating eye and vision status; 5) Identification of therapies used to treat eye and vision problems; and 6) educational consequences of untreated vision malfunctions.

SPED 5563 - Field Studies in Special Education: Orientation and Mobility for the Classroom Teacher. Description: Recognize, comprehend, observe, perform and teach the fundamental principles and techniques of orientation and mobility to blind and visually impaired students.

SPED 5563- Field Studies in Special Education: Introduction to Braille. Description: Braille reading and writing of standard English braille will be introduced. Information on transcribing printed material into braille and the use of writing devices and technical aids will be presented. Students will also explore methods of teaching braille writing.

SPED 4072 - May have been taken in undergraduate program.

Additional Information


This special program for standard teacher certification in Visually Impaired is expected to be completed in two consecutive summer sessions. The program is comprised of two components and will be limited to 15 students each.
