The Small Business certificate is embedded in the Entrepreneurship, B.B.A program.

The certificate in Small Business introduces the fundamentals of starting and owning a small business. The certificate develops students’ ability to research and evaluate market opportunities, understand the basics of small business accounting and finance, develop a marketing plan, and manage and grow a small business.

At least 25 percent of the coursework applied to this embedded certificate must be satisfactorily completed at NSU.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Identify and evaluate business opportunities.
  2. Acquire knowledge of financial funding sources for new businesses.
  3. Use financial statements in business decision-making.
  4. Create a business and marketing plan.
  5. Acquire digital marketing skills including the use of social media.

Prerequisite courses:


Admission into the certificate program is open to any student currently enrolled as an undergraduate student at NSU. People who are only interested in earning the certificate, but are not currently enrolled at NSU, can apply through the NSU Admissions office to be admitted for the purpose of pursuing the certificate.

Courses in the certificate program may require prerequisites.  For students who do not have the required prerequisites, transcripts and work experience will be examined by the Department Chair and course instructors to determine whether prerequisites may be waived and/or prior learning credit be given in lieu of specific prerequisites.

The following prerequisite courses are completed as part of General Education degree requirements or as part of the B.B.A. core.
