The Graduate Degrees of Excellence

The following graduate learning outcomes were developed by the Graduate Council to articulate the graduate-level degree expectations. 

Outcome

Description

Knowledge - Articulate current and historical theories, concepts, and models of the discipline.

Graduate students should be competent in their specialized field of study and able to integrate knowledge across content areas.

Information literacy - Evaluate the validity and comparative worth of diverse information sources related to the relevant discipline.

Graduate students should possess the ability to evaluate the literature and comparative resources of the discipline and understand the major issues in the current state of knowledge.

Scholarship - Apply the discipline’s knowledge, skills, theories, and attitudes to solve problems.

Graduate students should apply knowledge in the discipline to solve sophisticated problems and interpret technical issues.

Communication - Effectively communicate knowledge within the discipline.

Graduate students should possess the ability to write and speak about the current issues of the discipline to peers, practitioners, and the public. They should be able to articulate and demonstrate knowledge of the discipline and write and present scholarship to professionals.

Diversity - Evaluate diverse points of view embedded within varying frameworks which may include temporal, cultural, linguistic, sociopolitical, or technological contexts.

Graduate students should be able to draw on specialized knowledge, specific theories, evidence, tools, and methods from diverse perspectives.

Ethical Reasoning - Evaluate ethical considerations to civic, societal, environmental, and economic challenges specific to their discipline.

Graduate students will be able to reason ethically in evaluating various perspectives, policies, and/or practices relevant to one’s field of study.
