The mission of the Spanish Bachelor of Arts degree program is to assist students in acquiring an advanced level of proficiency (as defined by ACTFL, the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) in all four language domains and in interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational forms of communication. The program also has the goal of helping students gain a high level of familiarity with both the products and practices of Hispanic cultures so that they can interact successfully with members of these cultures and appreciate their history and achievements. Finally, the Spanish Bachelor of Arts program seeks to prepare students to utilize their language skills professionally and to become lifelong language learners.

Student Learning Outcomes

ACTFL Standard 1: Language Profeciency

  1. Speak in the interpersonal mode at a proficiency level of at least Advanced Low on the ACTFL scale.
  2. Interpret informational texts at a proficiency level of at least Advanced Low on the ACTFL scale.
  3. Speak extemporaneously in the presentational mode at a proficiency level of at least Advanced Low on the ACTFL scale.
  4. Write in the presentational mode at a proficiency level of at least Advanced Low on the ACTFL scale.

ACTFL Standard 2: Cultures, Linguistics, Literatures, and Concepts from Other Disciplines

  1. Analyze elements of word and sentence formation in an authentic informational text on an interdisciplinary topic.
  2. Analyze phonological, morphological, syntactic, and dialectical elements of the speech of an authentic videotext.
  3. Examine the relationship between traditional and contemporary cultural products and practices of specific locations in the Spanish-speaking world and the perspectives of Hispanic cultures.
  4. Interpret literary texts that represent the traditions and contemporary issues of Hispanic cultures
  5. Research a previously unexplored cultural, literary, or cross-disciplinary topic from the Spanish-speaking world.

ACTFL Standard 6: Professional Development, Advocacy, and Ethics

  1. Use technology and face-to-face experiences to develop their language skills and cultural awareness.
  2. Plan for continued improvement of their language skills and cultural awareness.
  3. Devise a rationale for world language study that includes the cognitive, academic, affective, and economic benefits to P-12 students.
  4. Reflect on the value of continued participation in professional learning communities.

Additional Program Requirements

Students in the Spanish B.A. degree program will participate in and complete program assessment procedures. These procedures include, but may not be limited to, periodic evaluations of speaking and writing proficiency and the creation of a portfolio of artifacts from the student’s upper-division Spanish courses. Assessment procedures are administered by Spanish faculty without cost to the student.

Minimum Grade Requirement

Students must earn a grade of C or better in courses used for major or minor credit. Grades lower than a C from NSU or transfer institutions will not apply for major or minor credit.

General Education Requirements


A minimum of 46 hours of academic work in general education is required during the freshman and sophomore years.  For students transferring with the Associate of Arts degree or Associate of Science degree from a public institution in Oklahoma, all general education requirements will be satisfied with respect to degree requirements.  However, some majors may require other specific general education courses as program prerequisites or program requirements.  Students should consult advisors and the program’s plan of study for further information.  Students are required to complete general education requirements by the time they have completed 90 semester hours of college work.  See General Education Requirements  for more information.

The following are course prerequisites that may be completed as part of the General Education requirements.

Spanish Electives - 18 hours


Major Total - 40 hours


Minor - 18 hours


A minor is required for the Spanish major.

Note


For information on the French or German programs, please see the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts. To obtain a minor in a language, the student must take 18 hours in only one language area.

Additional Degree Information - College of Liberal Arts


In addition to general education and program requirements stated above, additional hours may be needed to satisfy all minimum degree requirements listed below.

  • English Proficiency: Components I and II of English proficiency should be met with grades of “C” or better prior to the completion of 60 credit hours.
  • ​A minimum of 124 hours is required. PE activity is limited to four hours. Prior learning credit (CLEP, Advanced Standing, Military Credit, etc) is limited to 30 hours.
  • ​A minimum of 30 hours in residence (from NSU) is required for graduation. PE activity is limited to four hours. Hours in residence exclude zero-level courses and prior learning credit such as CLEP, Advanced Placement, Advanced Standing, Military Credit, etc.​
  • A minimum of 40 hours of 3000/4000 level courses is required for graduation.  ​
  • A minimum of 60 hours from a 4-year school is required for graduation excluding zero level and PE activity courses.
  • At least fifty percent of the major requirements must be upper division courses (3000 and 4000 level).
  • At least 18 hours or fifty percent of the major, whichever is greater, must be satisfactorily completed at NSU.
  • The minimum number of credit hours required in the Liberal Arts and Sciences varies based on the type of degree.  B.A., B.A.Ed., B.F.A. and B.M.E. degrees require at least 80 hours.  B.S. and B.S.Ed. degrees require at least 55 hours.  B.G.S. and B.S.W. degrees require at least 40 hours.  Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) courses are identified in catalog course descriptions.
