This certificate is embedded in the History, B.A. program.

The 12-credit hour certificate in Public History is designed to prepare indiividuals with an undergradute degree for entry level, or with experience, management-level positions as historical interpreters, historic site directors, museum administrators, oral historians, and other positions in public history.

At least 25 percent of the coursework applied to this certificate must be satisfactorily completed at NSU.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate a command of the content and methodology of public history.
  2. Demonstrate the ability to apply historical thinking skills such as sourcing, contextualization, close reading, and corroboration.
  3. Demonstrate the ability to research and write lucid, scholarly papers.
  4. Demonstrate an appreciation for the historical experience of people of different race, ethnicity, gender, class, and region.
  5. Apply appropriate technology to the study of history.
