Purpose

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association defines the scope of practice of speech-language pathology as the evaluation and treatment of all aspects of communication and swallowing and related areas that impact communication and swallowing: speech production, fluency, language, cognition, voice, resonance, feeding, swallowing, and hearing. (Scope of Practice) The Bachelor of Science in Speech-Language Pathology provides pre-professional undergraduate education as a prerequisite for admission to a master’s degree program in Speech-Language Pathology.

Credential Requirements

A master’s degree is required for licensure in speech-language pathology and for the Certificate in Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC/SLP).

To qualify for the CCC/SLP, students who complete the Master of Science degree will have the academic and clinical practicum experience necessary to pass the required speech-language pathology Praxis exam and to complete the required Clinical Fellowship after graduation.

To practice in the State of Oklahoma, students must complete the Master of Science degree program, the Clinical Fellowship, and pass the Praxis exam in order to apply for a license in speech-language pathology from the Oklahoma State Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology (OBESPA).

To practice in the Oklahoma public schools, students who complete the Master of Science degree program must pass three competency examinations and apply for the Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) Standard Certificate in Speech-Language Pathology. The three competency examinations are the Oklahoma General Education Test (OGET), the Oklahoma Professional Teaching Examination (OPTE), and the Oklahoma Subject Area Test (OSAT) Speech-Language Pathology (035) exam.

Student Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate depth and breadth of understanding of fundamental concepts of speech-language pathology.
Teach effective speech-language pathology lessons that can lead learners to a deep understanding of concepts within speech-language pathology.
Focus on the academic, clinical and research foundations needed for a career in communication disorders.
Prepare the student to make decisions and to take appropriate, thoughtful action to identify and to meet the communication needs of individuals and families.

General Education Requirements - 47 hours

While NSU requires a minimum of 46 hours of academic work in general education during the freshman and sophomore years, some majors may require other specific general education courses as program prerequisites or program requirements. These prerequisites raise the general education requirement for this major to 47 hours. For students transferring with the Associate of Arts degree or Associate of Science degree from a public institution in Oklahoma, all general education requirements will be satisfied except where program prerequisites are needed. Students should consult advisors and the program’s plan of study for further information. SLP General Education Requirements

The following General Education courses meet the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) prerequisite requirements for Certification Standards. Transfer students must examine whether General Education courses taken at another college of university meet ASHA Certification Standards. Students must earn a C or better in these courses.

Admission Requirements

To be admitted to the undergraduate SLP program students must complete the following courses with a grade of B or better. Students can be conditionally admitted (admitted on probation) with one C in the listed courses, but must make a B or better in all subsequent courses. Students who fail to earn a B or better in these courses will be denied enrollment in additional SLP courses.

Upon completion of the courses below and having earned an overall GPA of 3. 0 or better, students may be admitted to the undergraduate SLP program.

Retention Requirements

After admission, students must continue to earn a B or better in SLP courses. Students who fail to earn a B or better will be denied enrollment in additional SLP courses and must meet with the program advisor for remediation. Students will be allowed one attempt to improve any course grade to a B or better. Students who earn a second C (or below) in any course will be removed from the program.

Guided Observation Hours

ASHA requires that students observe 25 hours of speech therapy sessions. For admission to the Master of Science in SLP at NSU, students must have completed these guided observation hours before matriculation. For every hour of observation, a CCC/SLP who has completed ASHA’s requirements for clinical supervision must spend 15 minutes debriefing what was observed. Student must earn a minimum overall grade point average of 3.00 on a 4. 0 scale.

Accelerated B.S.S.L.P. Speech-Language Pathology to M.S. Speech-Language Pathology Degree

Note: Please refer to Accelerated Bachelor’s to Master’s Degree Program for complete information concerning the minimum requirements of the Accelerated Degree Program (ADP). The Speech-Language Pathology, M.S. degree requires a minimum grade of B. Refer to the current Graduate Catalog for master’s degree requirements.

IMPORTANT:

Students admitted to the Accelerated B.S.S.L.P. Speech-Language Pathology to M.S. Speech-Language Pathology degree program will complete up to 18 hours of graduate level credit to apply toward both the undergraduate and graduate degrees.
Students may not receive credit toward both the undergraduate and the paired graduate-level course. A student completing an undergraduate course and the paired graduate-level course will only receive credit for one course toward the bachelor’s degree.
A minimum grade of B is required for all 5000 level graduate courses.
Students who do not follow the approved degree plan may become ineligible to continue in the accelerated degree program.
Prior to completing the undergraduate degree, if the undergraduate GPA, graduate GPA and/or overall GPA fall below a 3.00, the student becomes ineligible to continue in the ADP.
Students may withdraw from an approved accelerated degree pathway. Graduate credit hours completed prior to the student withdrawing or becoming ineligible to continue in the ADP apply toward the undergraduate degree only.

In addition to general education and program requirements stated above, additional hours may be needed to satisfy all minimum degree requirements listed below.

English Proficiency: Components I and II of English proficiency should be met with grades of “C” or better prior to the completion of 60 credit hours.
A minimum of 120 hours is required althout several science and health profession majors require more. PE activity hours cannot be counted toward the total degree credit hours. Prior learning credit (CLEP, Advanced Standing, Military Credit, etc) is limited to 30 hours.
A minimum of 30 hours in residence (from NSU) is required for graduation. Hours in residence exclude zero-level courses and prior learning credit such as CLEP, Advanced Placement, Advanced Standing, Military Credit, etc.
A minimum of 40 hours of 3000/4000 level courses is required for graduation.
A minimum of 60 hours from a 4-year school is required for graduation excluding zero level and PE activity courses.
At least fifty percent of the major requirements must be upper division courses (3000 and 4000 level).
At least 18 hours or fifty percent of the major, whichever is greater, must be satisfactorily completed at NSU.
The minimum number of credit hours required in the Liberal Arts and Sciences varies based on the type of degree. B.S. degrees require at least 55 hours and B.S.Ed., B.S.M.L.S., B.S.N., and B.S.S.L.P. degrees require at least 40 hours.
